Broodthaers Broodthaers
Paradiesersatz Wintergarden

Our thoughts about an art project on the Alexanderplatz station were circling around the well-known flaws of the space, and we finally honed in on an already existing concept which will counter the effect of the place.

Set description: On the platform of the U2 subway line, the Winter Garden of Marcel Broodthaers will be recreated. It will transport the Winter Garden, first shown in 1974 at the Palais Beaux Arts in Brussels, from the public space of the museum to the public space of the city. The result is a widening of the public audience, in which the original artwork is further developed, its public effect is widened, and the borders of the museum are spread into the public space.

We will place two islands with palm trees and French garden chairs directly in front of the entrances to the platform. Each island consists of thirteen mid-sized palm trees, positioned to form a circle. The circles open to the edge of the platform. In the group of palms, there are seven French garden chairs. The inside of these two oases is illuminated by 5 ultraviolet plant lights, type CONCENTRA Spot R18, natural. This light will give the plants the necessary living conditions and also serve as an illumination of the islands from the inside, producing the effect of sunlight coming through green leaves. This light situation is an optical signal. It will lessen the unfriendly climate of the station and will give way to a more pleasant atmosphere.

The Alexanderplatz subway station was finished in 1913. The architects at the time had added plant details on the capitals of the columns. Like us, they might have longed for a piece of nature in this underworld of reinforced concrete and steel constructions. Near the information point of the transit authority, there are two showcases filled with material about Marcel Broodthaers and a documentation of the project.

On the 36 panels on the walls behind the tracks, enlarged etchings of nature motifs from the turn of the last century will be shown.

At multiple dates, a camel will be lead from the Alexanderplatz down onto the platform. This performance will be documented and will be added to the display in the show cases.

This project was designed for the art competition concerning the Alexanderplatz U2 subway station (in collaboration with Susanne Bosch). In recent years it was organized by the Neuen Gesellschaft für Bildende Kunst.
